T-Minus 6 days…
April 21st, 2008 Posted in Wii
6 days until Mario Kart Wii comes out, and then it will be complete. What will? The total number of games that I must buy for the Wii, that’s what. There are absolutely no games on the radar for the entire next year that appeal to me. Could it be true that the Wii is really just a virus? That people don’t want to buy games for it, that it’s just for Wii Sports?
I don’t know — I have a dozen or so games sitting on my shelf now, and I said over and over in the podcast that I was excited about the Wii, that I couldn’t wait for some of the possibilites that were going to come along with it: the Virtual Console, Wii Ware, the motion controls, etc. But now I’m sitting here, trying to connect up to who knows who on Smash Bros. only to have yet another time out, or network error, and I’m thinking to myself, “might as well just turn on my 360…”
What happened? Where is the awesome? Where is the revolution? Have we been duped? Many will say I was naive to even expect, or hope that things were going to be different this time. I celebrated the sales numbers for the Wii and DS and thought that yes, many people are buying it who aren’t the hardcore, but that extends the reach… it’ll be like the PlayStation 1/2! Has it? Well to this point no.
What we have are a handful of great games for the Wii that the hardcore will play. Fewer still that are network connected. And fewer still that actually work well being network connected. Friendcodes, lack of focus on developing games around the controls, and an abandoning of the hardcore are slowly weening (wiining?) me off my Wii.
Tell me I’m missing something. Tell me that “Check Mii Out!” is the best thing ever and I’m just overlooking it. Tell me how you’ve had your life changed by AP stories pushed to you over the news channel.
You can try all you want. I think I’m losing my patience. /rant

To be fair, Nintendo haven’t announced their game releases for the end of the year yet (I’m hoping for a new Animal Crossing personally). It’s clear that they want focus solely on Wii Fit at the moment.
I’ll be getting our Wii Fit in 4 days (If my pre-order still holds merit!) and also RockBand at the end of August (Ack!). I was planning to buy a European copy of Smash Bros. so that I could play on-line properly, but after seeing what a disaster the on-line mode is for that game I don’t think I’ll be bothering. On the flip side, Mario Kart’s on-line play will entirely change your perception of the WFC. There’s minimum waiting and no lag which is surprising/fantastic, especially considering that half of the 12 players are often in Japan. I’ve been playing loads of on-line races in the past week, I love it - I’ve only played single player mode to unlock Mii support.
Also, it’s totally noticeable which people are playing whilst drunk, heh.

I’ll be one of those drunk bastards. Hopefully. Weather permitting.
